Oldest Logger named at Zwolle Fest; Association honors Logger of Year

Jeffrey Martinez, a fourth generation logger from Zwolle, was named Logger of the Year for 2012 by the Louisiana Loggers Association/Self Insured Fund, at the Association's annual membership meeting in Winnfield on April 27.

Martinez, owner of TJM Logging, Inc., is son of the late A.T. (BeBee) Martinez and his wife, Nanette, and started his career in 1978, working with his father and uncle, G.J. (Pie) Martinez in Martinez Bros. Logging. In 1980, A.T. Martinez and his sons formed their own company, and finally, in 1997, Jeffrey moved out on his own with his present company. His two brothers also have their own separate companies.

Jeffrey says his operation specializes in clear-cut logging for Martin Timber Company, in collaboration with Walsh Timber Company of Zwolle.

Jeffrey is married to the former Felicia Ebarb. They have a son, Jared, 29, and a daughter, Morgan, 24, and one granddaughter.

Martinez, who has been a member of Louisiana Loggers Association since 1995, said, he learned the logging business from top professionals--his father and uncle--and his associations with Walsh Timber and Martin Timber, with whom he enjoys excellent working relationships.

"The reward is in having a good crew," Jeffrey said. He has seven employees, plus six contract truckers, working primarily in the Western Louisiana timber area.

An expanded view of the Martinez logging companies is contained in the story of the Martinez family's sponsorship of the 2012 poster contest for the Zwolle Loggers and Forest Festival, in this edition.
